Here at Sherwood Farms, we prize the health and well-being of our dogs above all else. Dog, puppies, and even cats (although I'm not a cat person), become full members of our families and sacrificially love us more than they love themselves.
If I was unmarried, and if I didn't have kids, I would probably live with 6 or 7 dogs and they would be my "family"! However, for most families - including mine, the reality is that having more than one or two dogs in a house is completely unworkable - as well as being unfair to the dogs.
In order to keep our family life in its proper perspective (read: "happy wife, happy life!"), we use what is called a Guardian Home model for our dogs - and we are actively looking for a new Guardian Home family!
In short: we buy a dog/puppy we would like to have as a Mommy Dog for our enterprise. We then find a loving and caring family that is willing to raise that dog in their home as their own family dog. We give - free of charge - the dog to this carefully selected family, and they build a bond of love and protection together.
When the dog is old enough to have puppies of her own - usually between 18-28 months of age - we breed the dog according to our needs and desires, and then when the puppies are ready to be born, we bring the pregnant Momma to our house where she delivers the puppies and cares for them until they are weaned.
Once the puppies are fully weaned, the Momma dog goes back to her family and continues to live as their family member. We typically only breed once per year for each Momma dog (although most dogs can safely have 2 litters per year), and never more than 5 total litters.
Once the dog is retired from our breeding program, the dog is officially transferred to the family as their own (period). We retain no rights or claims to the dog.
We pay for all of the needed expenses related to reproduction, and we provide a financial gift to the family every time there is a successful litter. (It usually comes close to paying for a year's supply of dog food - or providing a jump start to a vacation or a holiday gift buying fund)

We are acquiring an 8 week old Bernese Mountain Dog, and we need a home for her to live in!
This is our family dog, Terra when she was 8 weeks old. we are CRAZY about her!! We are getting her "sister from another litter". Terra's mom has new puppies this year and we were asked if we wanted one. (YES!!)
