"A Trip Through the Way-Back Machine," or, "Where Are They Now?" (3/28)

I tend to get attached to dogs, and especially puppies. I'm on "the other side of my thirties," and yes, my forties too, but that's not my point... In all my life, I have MAYBE met 3 or 4 dogs that I didn't want to connect with and pet. These were dogs that didn't like people, and I didn't have the time or desire to prove them wrong. I mostly just had time for fear.

The most notorious dog in my memory lived at the other end of my street as I was growing up. I never learned what his name was, but for convenience, let's call him "destroyer of children and haunter of nightmares" - or "Killer," for short.

Unfortunately, Killer lived directly across from the the High School, which was right next to the elementary school. I first noticed him in 4th or 5th grade as I was walking to school. This little video clip from "Sandlot" is like a clip from my childhood:

The reality was probably more "normal", but I'm the author, so I can claim creative license.

"Killer" sat on his back porch step and looked as peaceful as any dog could. But, when he smelled my sweet, innocent, youthful human blood, he sprang into action and chased me all the way to... well, even though he never wore a leash, he never actually left his property, so he could only chase me about 10 feet - but they were harrowing feet, let me tell you!!!!! (I usually just crossed the street before he saw me, and then locked eyes with him as I tried not to trip over the curb.)

Thanks to new technology, I can show you his porch from where the terror was unleashed:

As we now vicariously relive my childhood and I show peaceful pictures of suburban America, please bear in mind that back in the day, there was no Iron Curtain around the backyard to keep the wild, evil, carnivorous dog away from people like me (i.e. innocent, peaceful, shy, mild-mannered, etc.).

It was just Killer vs. Me - and my super fast shoes. I'm happy - and a bit proud - of being able to say Killer never caught me, but I had to evade him most every day in 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Fortunately, it wasn't soooo traumatic that I have remembered every single detail for the past 20+++ years!

Now, you might be asking yourself, "Why is he going on about this unfortunate childhood experience?"

Well, I guess the short answer would be that this episode from my childhood made me fall in love with dogs again, and again, and again. I knew I would always have a dog (or two) that loved people and would never scare kids.

That is what we do, here at Sherwood Farms, and through our sister-site CuteGoldendoodles.com. We raise puppies that grow into dogs that should never scare a child and will always want to please their humans and be loved in return. We want children to grow up with a dog and learn to be respectful around dogs, but not fearful.

OK. On to the puppy pictures!

Terra had her first litter of puppies last Fall/Winter. Recently I have received pictures of some of the puppies from their new homes. All of them are healthy and happy, and well loved, and THAT is what we are all about!

Thank you!
